  | Dear Ms. Dunson and Ms. Burnett and Members of the League of Women Voters:
Thank you for taking the time to email me regarding the ongoing issue of campaign finance reform. I appreciate receiving your comments.
I will support a bill that removes all "special interest" money from political campaigns immediately. This would include lobbyists, corporations, PACs and unions.
The democratic leadership have not presented the General Assembly with a bill fro me review. I am hopeful that a vote will be taken soon.
Again, thank you for writing and please do not hesitate to follow up with me should you have any further comments on this or any other matter of state concern.
Sincerely,
Bill Aman

I will be supporting all of the proposals for campaign finance reform including public financing. I will, however, be looking very carefully at the method used to fund public financing. Using general fund monies may place valuable dollars for the truly needy and nursing home patients at risk. If money runs out in years where there are an overabundance of candidates (as happened in MA) we may run into the problem of the constitutional spending cap. I have yet to decide my vote on the appropriate funding mechanism for public financing but have signed onto to all other aspects of this bill.

Dear Ms. Dunson, Thank you very much for writing me on campaign finance reform - which is, in my view, the most important issue facing state government today. As you may be aware, I have fought for public financing of campaigns since first winning election to the Assembly in 1994. There is no issue to which I have dedicated more time than this one. In 1999 and again in 2000, my Majority Leader put me in charge of collecting votes for public financing - and, in both years, we garnered a majority of votes. Unfortunately, John Rowland vetoed the bill - and now we know why. Right now, I am working hard with friends in both chambers to make sure that we send another strong, workable public financing bill to the Governor's desk this month. It is my firm belief that, a short time from now, the House and Senate will pass a landmark public financing bill in concurrence. The bill will ban contributions from contractors, corporations and special interests, and give us campaigns in which candidates are most indebted to the people - not special interests. In short, it will take the big money out of state politics. And I am cautiously optimistic that, this time, the Governor will sign the measure. Thank you again for taking the time to write me on this most critical issue. Best wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy fall.
Sincerely,
Andy Andrew M. Fleischmann State Representative 18th Assembly District West Hartford, CT

Dear Cheryl Dunson:
Thank you for contacting my office regarding your support for election reform. I wanted to let you know that I supported enacting real campaign finance reform back in June; I supported real campaign finance reform on October 11 and I will continue to support real campaign finance reform. Many of my Republican colleagues and I have pushed for campaign finance reforms on several occasions and on each occasion, we have been rebuffed by the Democrat Majority.
While I do not believe in public financing, I do believe that there are other ways in which we can reform the campaign system. I feel that changing the number of years for being in an office from 2 to 3 or even 4 years would help decrease the need for campaigning and fundraising. Further steps could also be taken to require full disclosure and limiting PAC contributions and Ad books would be an improvement.
I thank you for taking the time to contact my office and should you like to discuss this or any other issue further, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Sincerely,
DebraLee Hovey

Dear Cheryl:
Thank you for your email concerning possible legislation on public financing of political campaigns during this special session of the legislature.
I have repeatedly voted for and supported bans/limits on lobbyist and state contractor contributions, bans on ad books, limits on legislative PACs and PAC contributions, transparent filing and reporting of campaign finances, etc. This is all part of the public record.
Also part of the public record is my opposition to using taxpayers' dollars to fund everyone's campaigns. Part of running for office is being able to demonstrate citizen support for your campaign. That support includes the ability to raise funds from your constituents. I personally do not want my tax dollars paying campaign expenses for some of the candidates I've encountered over the years!
Thanks again for your comments and support. Take care!
Sincerely,
Claudia "Dolly" Powers

Thank you for your kind email informing me that my vote on campaign finance reform will be reported to the members of the League of Women Voters. I am willing to support campaign finance reform that includes:
1. A ban on adbooks 2. A ban on PAC contributions 3. A ban on state contractor contributions 4. A ban on lobbyist contributions
This would remove all of the special interest money from political campaigns. I am not willing to support any type of public financing. There is absolutely no reason why public money needs to be used to finance political campaigns. I am sure you would agree that there are many pressing social issues that are in dire need of government funding and to divert any money away from these worthy causes and towards the financing of political campaigns would be a travesty.
Additionally, in the interest of full disclosure, I certainly hope that when you report back to your members on my vote against public financing of campaign that you will also report to them that one of the major organizations supporting the supporting the "Clean Up Connecticut Coalition" is the Connecticut Communist Party (for your review, the list of organizations can be found at http://www.cleanupconnecticut.org/about/ .)
Though I am a little bit surprised that your organization would put its good reputation on the line by affiliating itself with the Connecticut Communist Party, I would expect that you will be informing your members of your new affiliation.
Sincerely,
Sean Williams

Hi Cheryl-
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the campaign you have orchestrated in an effort to enact public financing of political campaigns. Had the LWV and other organizations who support public financing not urged several of my constituents to e-mail and call my office, I would not have had the opportunity to tell all of the things that you and the other groups conveniently left out while asking them to urge me to support this bill.
Most reasonable people agree that special interest money needs to be removed from political campaigns. However, many of the people referred to me by you and other special interest groups over the past few months have also agreed that public financing of political campaigns is not necessary and that there are plenty of good possible uses for public money other than for political campaigns.
Once again, thank you for referring these people to me. It has given me great satisfaction to engage in a healthy debate with people on this issue and it has been a great education for me to see how little they have been told by organizations such as yours about the very issue you are asking them to speak to me about.
Sincerely, Sean Williams
