Dear Cheryl-
Thank you for your email. I would appreciate it if you could explain to me, as a member of the LWV, how forcing the taxpayers to pay for campaigns would "clean up" the system? I would also like to know why the LWV has never come out in support of any of my bills over the last seven years that simply eliminates "special-interest" money, and only allowing individual contributions, truly giving the power back to the people. Finally, please explain to me how taxpayer-funded campaigns has cleaned up the Presidential races.
Thank you again for your email. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
David Cappiello

Dear Ms. Dunson:
As Senator Ciotto's interim aide, I want to thank you for contacting him regarding campaign finance reform. As you know, this important issue is expected to be addressed during the upcoming days of Special Session of the Connecticut General Assembly. I will share your thoughts with Senator Ciotto as soon as possible.
Naturally, people have different ideas on the subject of campaign finance reform. Senator Ciotto supports campaign finance reform, and will keep your views in mind as he considers whatever legislative efforts are made during the Special Session. If there is a vote on legislation that will effect real change addressing the root causes of corruption based on money in politics, you may be assured that Senator Ciotto will vote in favor of such legislation.
Again, thank you for contacting Senator Ciotto. Please feel free to contact him in the future if he may be of any additional assistance.
Sincerely, Ben
Benedict R. Daigle
Interim Legislative Aide State Senator Biagio "Billy" Ciotto Legislative Office Building Room 2301 Hartford, Connecticut 06106 (860) 240-0595 fax: (860) 240-0021

Hi Cheryl - Thanks for your email and for writing. Obviously, I am for clean and fair elections. Frankly, I think the contracting bill is more important to the process, but that's just my opinion. There have been some interesting proposals so far and I won't vote for just anything so I can be called a "reformer". When I see a bill, I will then decide how I will vote. Sincerely, Bob

Dear Cheryl Dunson:
Thank you for writing. I am very happy to hear you will be publishing the voting record in the Senate. I have been a supporter of campaign finance reform since I arrived in the Senate nine years ago. I have worked with my colleagues toward achieving a truly representative election process all that time.
There is no question in my mind about the inconsistency of private money in public campaign. The voters should have confidence in the process of democracy, in campaigns and in work done on the people's behalf in the General Assembly.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Handley State Senator Fourth District

  | Here is Andrew McDonald's response to my query: I voted for CFR bill last session, and spent all summer working on the CFR Working Group. I know this legislative package better than most. I can't imagine you have had a chance to learn all the details, have you? There are many parts that I like, such as getting rid of Ad Books, curtailing some of the PAC contributions etc., but there is much to be disappointed with. Just one example: the average Senate race costs a candidate about $80,000 to run over the last couple of cycles, yet under this bill each qualifying candidate would get $150,000 with no new restrictions on how to spend it. Hiring friends or relatives to do no show jobs??.......perfectly legal!! I could give you many more examples. I'm working on trying to make the bill better and tighter because I would love to support it. But I won't vote for just anything so I can pat myself on the back and say what a great job we've done. We all have to get beyond the title of "Campaign Finance Reform" and ask, what does this bill really do? Replacing one flawed system with another and then congratulating ourselves would be the greatest affront of all.
